Lancaster's combined Chinese Studies and Politics program is delivered through a collaboration between the Department of Languages and Cultures and the Department of Politics, Philosophy and Religion.
The Chinese Studies component enables you to develop advanced language proficiency while exploring China's historical, cultural, social, and political landscape within a global framework. Students can begin Chinese studies at either introductory or advanced levels, with language and cultural instruction delivered through dynamic, interactive methods. As part of the Chinese Friendship Project, learners engage with the language in real-world contexts through activities like visits to Manchester's Chinatown, culinary workshops, film screenings, and cultural festival participation.
The Politics curriculum examines key concepts, themes, and historical developments that shape modern global affairs. First-year studies focus on foundational Chinese language and cultural studies alongside core Politics coursework, complemented by an optional minor subject.
During the second year, you'll enhance your language capabilities through dedicated oral and written Chinese modules at your proficiency level, while selecting specialized Politics courses from available options.
Your third year involves an International Placement in a Chinese-speaking environment, strengthening both linguistic fluency and intercultural awareness. This immersive experience may include study at a partner university, with departmental staff providing comprehensive preparation for your overseas academic journey.
