At St Andrews, Chinese Studies provides a comprehensive exploration of Chinese language and diverse cultural expressions. Moving past conventional approaches focused solely on language and literature, the program incorporates both visual media and contemporary popular culture. Although Chinese isn't currently available as a standalone Honours program at St Andrews, students can pursue it alongside numerous other disciplines through joint Honours degrees. The curriculum examines mainstream, alternative, and dissenting cultural expressions across national, regional, ethnic, and diasporic contexts. Coursework emphasizes modern issues with both Chinese and worldwide relevance through the analysis of texts and cultural practices. Key topics span gender and sexuality studies, environmental challenges, critiques of consumerism, as well as questions of accountability, governance, and historical remembrance.
