This four-year dual degree program merges the study of Chinese and Spanish languages and cultures, along with their respective global influences. The curriculum includes an international year spent in Chinese- or Spanish-speaking nations, or divided between both. Students develop advanced linguistic abilities while gaining deep insights into Chinese and Hispanic cultural and societal nuances within a worldwide framework.
Language and cultural studies are delivered through creative, interactive methods. For instance, the Chinese Friendship Project immerses students in social and cultural contexts through diverse activities. Past events have featured excursions to Manchester's Chinatown, Chinese culinary workshops, film screenings, and traditional festival observances.
Alongside essential language courses, students can select from various specialized modules examining cultural, historical, and political aspects, offering comparative perspectives on these regions in global settings.
First-year students complement their language studies with one additional module from related disciplines.
The second year continues with Chinese and Spanish language instruction (including both oral and written components for each language), alongside core subjects and two elective modules.
Students spend their third year abroad, either studying or working in Chinese- and/or Spanish-speaking environments. This immersive experience significantly enhances language skills and intercultural understanding. Options include academic exchanges at partner institutions or professional placements. Joint major participants may dedicate their year to one language region or divide it between both.
