The Chinese Studies and Philosophy dual degree at Lancaster is offered through a collaboration between the Department of Languages and Cultures and the Department of Politics, Philosophy and Religion.
Through the Chinese Studies curriculum, you'll develop advanced linguistic abilities while exploring China's rich historical, cultural, social, and political landscape within a global framework. The program employs creative teaching methods where language and cultural learning come together. As part of the Chinese Friendship Project, students experience language in real-world contexts through activities like visits to Manchester's Chinatown, culinary events, film screenings, and traditional festival celebrations.
The Philosophy component introduces fundamental questions across major philosophical disciplines including epistemology, ethics, metaphysics, and social philosophy. You'll examine both classical and modern philosophical responses while developing your own analytical skills to evaluate philosophical arguments and engage in meaningful discourse.
First-year studies focus on Chinese language acquisition (available at beginner or advanced levels) alongside core philosophical concepts and theories. Students also select an additional minor subject to complement their studies.
In the second year, you'll enhance your language proficiency while examining Chinese-speaking societies through cultural, political, and historical lenses. A globally-focused module like Understanding Cultures provides comparative perspectives, which you'll study alongside your Philosophy coursework.
