Lancaster's combined Chinese Studies and History program is delivered collaboratively by the Department of Languages and Cultures and the Department of History. This course features an international study opportunity during the third year.
The Chinese Studies component enables students to develop advanced language proficiency while exploring China's rich historical, cultural, social, and political landscape within a global framework. Students can begin Chinese language studies at either introductory or advanced levels, engaging with language and culture through dynamic teaching methods. For instance, the Chinese Friendship Project immerses learners in cultural contexts through diverse activities. Past events have included excursions to Manchester's Chinatown, Chinese culinary workshops, film screenings, traditional festival celebrations, and other interactive experiences.
The History curriculum enhances analytical skills through modules examining British, European, and global American historical perspectives.
First-year studies focus on foundational Chinese language and cultural studies alongside core history coursework. Students may also select an additional introductory subject from History or related disciplines to complement their degree.
