Lancaster's combined Chinese Studies and Mathematics program is delivered collaboratively by the Department of Languages and Cultures and the Mathematics and Statistics Department.
The Chinese Studies component enables students to develop advanced language proficiency while comprehensively exploring China's historical, cultural, social, and political landscape within a global framework. Students can begin Chinese studies at either introductory or advanced levels, engaging with language and culture through dynamic teaching methods. For instance, the Chinese Friendship Project immerses students in cultural contexts through diverse activities like excursions to Manchester's Chinatown, culinary events, film screenings, and traditional festival celebrations.
The Mathematics portion provides rigorous training in mathematical theory and application, with specialization options in pure mathematics or statistics.
First-year students examine foundational Chinese language and culture alongside core mathematics courses, complemented by a minor subject.
Second-year studies enhance language capabilities through dedicated oral and written Chinese modules at consistent proficiency levels. Students deepen their understanding of Chinese-speaking societies through specialized courses in culture, politics, and history, while selecting one globally-focused module that fosters cross-cultural comparisons. These studies are paired with various elective mathematics courses.
