Lancaster's combined Chinese Studies and English Literature program is delivered collaboratively by the Department of Languages and Cultures alongside the Department of English Literature and Creative Writing.
This degree allows students to develop advanced Chinese language proficiency while exploring China's historical, cultural, social, and political landscape within a global framework. Students can begin their Chinese studies at either introductory or advanced levels. The English Literature component covers diverse authors, literary styles, historical eras, movements, techniques, and critical perspectives.
Language and cultural learning occurs through dynamic, interactive methods. For instance, the Chinese Friendship Project immerses students in cultural contexts through various activities. Past events have included visits to Manchester's Chinatown, Chinese culinary workshops, film screenings, traditional festival observances, and other cultural experiences.
The initial year focuses on foundational Chinese language studies and cultural context, paired with a core English Literature module. Students may supplement this with additional literature options like World Literature or introductory creative writing courses.
Second-year studies enhance language capabilities through dedicated Chinese Oral and Written Skills modules at appropriate proficiency levels. Students deepen their understanding of Chinese-speaking cultures while selecting globally-focused modules that encourage comparative international perspectives. These studies complement continued English Literature coursework.
