St Andrews' Chinese Studies program provides a comprehensive exploration of Chinese language and diverse cultural expressions. Moving past conventional language and literature approaches, the curriculum incorporates both visual media and contemporary popular culture. Although Chinese isn't currently available as a standalone Honors program at St Andrews, students can pursue it alongside numerous other disciplines through joint Honors degrees. This program examines mainstream, alternative, and countercultural expressions across China's varied national, local, ethnic, and global communities. Coursework emphasizes modern textual analysis and cultural practices addressing both Chinese-specific and worldwide issues. Key themes include gender identity, environmental challenges, consumer culture impacts, governance transparency, and historical remembrance.
