At St Andrews, the Chinese Studies program provides a comprehensive exploration of Chinese language and cultural traditions. Moving past conventional approaches focused solely on language and literature, the curriculum incorporates both visual media and contemporary popular culture. Although Chinese isn't available as a standalone Honors program at St Andrews, students can pursue it alongside numerous other disciplines in a joint Honors degree. The program examines diverse cultural expressions—from mainstream to alternative—across national, regional, ethnic, and diasporic contexts. Coursework emphasizes modern themes relevant to both China and the world, such as gender identity, environmental challenges, consumer culture critiques, governance transparency, and historical remembrance.
