The Philosophy Department at King's stands as one of the UK's most extensive research hubs in this discipline. We provide individualized guidance to students across diverse research domains, with notable expertise in philosophical history (covering both analytic and continental traditions, from ancient Greek and Roman through Medieval, Early Modern, and 18th-20th century thought); mind, action, and psychological philosophy; theory of knowledge; metaphysical studies; scientific philosophy with emphasis on physics and medical philosophy; ethical theories; political philosophy; aesthetics; logical studies; and language philosophy. Our department fosters personalized mentorship across numerous philosophical specialties. As a comprehensive and cohesive unit, we facilitate interdisciplinary research bridging philosophy's many branches. Graduate students typically receive supervision from our philosophy faculty, though those seeking guidance from other King's departments should apply directly to those units for graduate admission. Our PhD program focuses solely on philosophical research, requiring at least three years of full-time commitment. Candidates maintain regular supervisory meetings to develop their dissertations. Initial enrollment is as MPhil students, allowing for research refinement and academic writing development. First-year students present a thesis proposal and substantial writing sample for evaluation before advancing to full PhD status.Upon completion, candidates submit a doctoral dissertation not exceeding 100,000 words, evaluated by two external examiners unaffiliated with King's.
