The coming era of research and emerging professions will demand robust interdisciplinary approaches that bridge concepts from science, social sciences, arts, and humanities. Our innovative PhD program plays a pivotal role in this mission by offering doctoral education to cultivate tomorrow's interdisciplinary scholars, thought leaders, and pioneers. Tomorrow's research landscape and career opportunities will necessitate powerful interdisciplinary frameworks that connect scientific, social scientific, and humanistic perspectives.
This doctoral initiative is central to our strategy, delivering training to develop a new wave of cross-disciplinary investigators. We guide students in crafting coherent, original research proposals that synthesize elements from scientific, artistic, and societal domains. Our supervisory approach includes identifying specialized mentors throughout UCL when needed, while supporting students in obtaining essential research training.
Illustrative projects merging societal, artistic, and scientific dimensions might explore healthcare innovations, data science intersecting with ethical philosophy to address social equity, or climate science combined with media studies. Students are encouraged to investigate any disciplinary combinations relevant to their interdisciplinary objectives.
Participants will have opportunities to showcase their work during departmental seminars for faculty and peers, as well as at an annual retreat. These events maintain a welcoming, casual environment aimed at enhancing research presentation abilities and cross-disciplinary perspectives. The program facilitates collaboration with Arts and Sciences faculty through research discussion groups, peer support systems, and specialized training sessions.
