IntroductionThe Department of International Development (DID) at King's College takes a distinctive approach compared to conventional development studies programs in the UK and internationally. Our focus centers on locally-initiated development within 'emerging economies' and broader Global South contexts. With shifting growth patterns and evolving global power dynamics, we examine pressing questions about the world economy, national progress, and achieving sustainable, fair growth. Our research investigates the roots of effective development and persistent challenges by analyzing region-specific economic, social, and political transformations, moving beyond rigid development frameworks. We maintain six specialized research clusters:- Climate, Environment, and Disparate Development- Global Capitalism, Power & Development Disparities- Worldwide Production, Finance, and Workforce Dynamics- Inequality, Marginalization, and Development Strategies- Equity and Social Justice- Technological Advancements and Economic ProgressOur interdisciplinary strengths incorporate political science, sociology, anthropology, development economics, history, geography, and management studies. We maintain robust regional knowledge and partnerships across Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, Southeast Asia, China, and India.
