Our globally renowned Developmental Origins of Health and Disease Centre pioneers effective interventions for mothers and infants both in the UK and internationally.
By integrating research from the Medical Research Council Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit (LEU), the NIHR Nutrition Biomedical Research Centre, and the University's Institute of Developmental Sciences, we establish a hub of expertise employing epidemiological approaches to enhance human health through:
identifying environmental factors across the lifespan that contribute to chronic musculoskeletal conditions, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, enabling the creation of population-wide and targeted prevention methods, preserving and expanding long-term Southampton-based cohort studies (including the Hertfordshire Cohort Study, Southampton Women's Survey, Southampton Initiative for Health, and MAVIDOS trial) as vital national and international resources for investigating developmental health origins, guiding health policies and practices with evidence-based insights and comprehensive knowledge synthesis, and (d) advancing education, research capabilities, knowledge sharing, and public awareness regarding chronic disease epidemiology throughout life stages.
