The Lau Institute invites submissions of high-quality research proposals from prospective candidates. We particularly encourage studies focusing on political economy, contemporary Chinese political science, China's international relations, and environmental issues related to China. Prospective applicants should begin by reviewing the research specialties of our core faculty members at the Lau China Institute to identify a suitable supervisor. Candidates should then contact their chosen supervisor to discuss their application and submit the following materials: A CV and a research proposal (maximum 5 pages) outlining the project title, central research questions, theoretical framework, academic contributions, and methodological approach. Special attention should be given to demonstrating how the research engages with existing scholarship, its potential academic impact, and the feasibility of any fieldwork (including practical considerations, funding requirements, and ethical approvals).
A Masters degree is usually required. In exceptional circumstances only, an undergraduate degree with 1st Class or high 2:1 honours degree will be considered. IELTS (Academic): 7.0 overall with a minimum of 6.5 in each skill. TOEFL iBT: 100 overall with a minimum of 25 in writing and 23  in each of the other skills.
