Worldwide critical issues like sustainability, environmental boundaries, social equity, and quality of life extend beyond pure technical solutions. These complex issues require engineering to intersect with diverse non-engineering fields, multiple stakeholders, and both present and future considerations. Systems thinking offers a comprehensive approach to such problems. It empowers engineers to adopt fresh viewpoints, manage intricate scenarios, and create innovative solutions that fairly address various stakeholders' needs. This methodology is transforming engineering from narrow technical focuses to a broader perspective, becoming fundamental to Civil Engineering. Consequently, it forms a foundational element of our Institute. This approach is reflected in our diverse faculty, spanning engineering to social sciences, and in our cross-disciplinary research areas including infrastructure durability, carbon footprint analysis, sustainability evaluation, risk management, optimal resource utilization, and human-centered design.
