GCU's Optometry degree program delivers comprehensive theoretical and practical training, preparing graduates with expert clinical skills to practice as autonomous eyecare specialists. Optometrists are healthcare professionals who diagnose vision issues, prescribe corrective eyewear including glasses and contact lenses, and manage various ocular conditions like Glaucoma and Age-related Macular Degeneration. In Scotland, optometrists hold broader healthcare responsibilities than in other UK regions. Our four-year Optometry curriculum focuses on developing the specialized knowledge and clinical competencies required for these expanded roles. Students receive exceptional clinical and academic training, consistently praised in student feedback, with extensive hands-on experience at our state-of-the-art on-campus Vision Centre.
Since 1971, GCU has served as Scotland's premier institution for non-medical eyecare education. Our graduates enjoy outstanding employment prospects and strong recognition from employers across the UK. Career paths include private practice, hospital eye departments, academic roles, and research positions. After completing one year of supervised clinical practice and passing The College of Optometrists' registration assessment, graduates achieve full optometry qualification.
Successful completion of three years of the BSc Orthoptics course at GCU with not less than a Merit, or 2:1 degree in Orthoptics.
