The department's urban geography studies focus on analyzing how cities are created, managed, challenged, and reshaped. Our work explores what defines modern urban development, examining governance methods, the spheres of city living and transformation, and possibilities for urban equity and democratic practices. Central to our inquiry is examining the evolving connections between urban environments and spatial dynamics - whether through developing technological and environmental systems, shaping and challenging economic-political structures, observing local community interactions, or studying informal urban interactions. We investigate urban spaces as interconnected - and moving beyond traditional connections - while exploring various perspectives on global urbanization. For example, how do concepts of 'urban' and 'world' evolve as urbanization spreads globally? We challenge the division of urban studies between developed and developing regions, instead exploring how diverse urban realities and theoretical backgrounds can broaden our approaches to studying cities worldwide.
