Our Master of Arts in Climate, Risk and Society offers comprehensive insights into how human-induced global climate shifts create emerging societal risks and challenges, manifesting through both direct environmental impacts and indirect political consequences.
This program examines global perceptions, management strategies, and mitigation approaches to climate risks across individuals, institutions, and governments. Adopting a social science perspective on climate change, resilience, and risk, the curriculum appeals equally to students from natural sciences, engineering, and social science backgrounds.
Over one year (full-time) or two years (part-time), you'll complete modules covering risk analysis, societal aspects of risk and resilience, and applied geographical methods. The program culminates with a significant research project, allowing you to choose between traditional academic research or a practice-oriented dissertation incorporating fieldwork placements.
Practical learning is enhanced through collaboration with Durham's Institute of Hazard, Risk and Resilience (IHRR), providing exposure to cutting-edge academic and professional perspectives. The IHRR also organizes specialized seminar series for students in climate and risk-related postgraduate programs.
Joining Durham means becoming part of a dynamic postgraduate community that blends social and academic engagement. You'll have opportunities to participate in research events, develop professional connections, and attend departmental and university-wide lectures throughout your studies.
