Examining how minerals and rocks shape Earth's surface reveals insights about historical and current environmental shifts. This understanding helps create strategies to safeguard communities and ecosystems against modern threats like climate change, disasters, resource depletion, and sustainability issues.
Our adaptable program offers foundational knowledge with growing specialization options, letting you tailor your academic journey. The BSc Geology holds accreditation from the Geological Society of London.
Merging academic rigor with innovative research, this course prepares graduates for diverse fields including mineral/petroleum exploration, engineering geology, environmental consulting, GIS, geological surveys, or advanced studies. The program cultivates numeracy, analytical reasoning, and problem-solving abilities that are equally valuable in non-geological professions like education, management, finance, and insurance.
First-year studies establish core Earth Science principles and field skills through practical work, including a Lake District excursion. Year 2 focuses deeper on geological processes (igneous, metamorphic, sedimentary, tectonic) through three intensive field courses in Assynt, Almeria, and Arran. The final year features a geological mapping research project and specialized topic studies, with multiple fieldwork opportunities including a Cyprus expedition.
Eligible students may transition to the four-year MSci Earth Sciences program after their second year.
