Philosophy explores deep and meaningful questions that emerge in every aspect of human existence—questions like "What constitutes a fulfilling life?" By pursuing a philosophy degree, you'll develop the analytical tools to thoughtfully examine life's essential values and how personal well-being connects with social bonds, family, community, politics, and culture.

Our program features a unique, research-driven curriculum with extensive flexibility. Regardless of your focus, you'll learn from globally recognized scholars in their disciplines.

Durham provides one of the most comprehensive philosophy degrees nationwide. Instead of specializing in a single tradition, you'll gain broad expertise in both analytical philosophy (Anglo-American tradition) and continental philosophy, each with distinct methodologies and concerns. We excel particularly in philosophy of science, social science, and the history of science and medicine. You may also opt to extend your three-year program to four years with a placement or study abroad opportunity.

Since philosophy is unfamiliar to many undergraduates, first-year courses cover foundational topics through introductory modules.

Second-year studies sharpen critical thinking for independent research while offering more specialized course options.

The third-year centers on your original dissertation project, serving as the capstone of your academic journey.
