The BA in Music and Philosophy allows you to delve into both fields while investigating their intriguing connections. You'll join two dynamic academic departments. Situated within a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Durham provides an ideal blend of historic tradition and contemporary innovation.
Our program uniquely bridges classical and modern musical studies, covering diverse historical and current genres while pioneering fresh perspectives in musicology, composition, music technology, analysis, ethnomusicology, and performance.
The philosophy component introduces you to major philosophical branches, including metaphysics and epistemology alongside moral philosophy. You may also opt to extend your three-year program to four years by adding a placement year or study abroad opportunity.
First-year studies include foundational and elective modules offering comprehensive introductions to both disciplines' methodologies.
Second-year coursework focuses more intensively on cultivating critical thinking and analytical abilities through specialized subject areas.
The final year centers on an independent capstone project, which may involve a composition portfolio, public performance, or dissertation in either music or philosophy.
