Mental health nurses play a vital role in healthcare systems by assisting individuals with mental health challenges and promoting wellness and recovery. These professionals serve diverse populations, delivering research-backed care to patients with both short-term and long-term conditions while also supporting their families.Our program maintains strong partnerships with regional healthcare providers, enabling us to offer varied clinical placements throughout all three years of study. Students may gain experience in settings including psychiatric inpatient units, community mental health services, and specialized environments like HMP Leicester, maternal mental health programs, emergency psychiatric services, and youth mental health initiatives (CAMHS).Placements are primarily located throughout the East Midlands region, including Leicester, Leicestershire, and Rutland, with occasional opportunities in neighboring areas. During placements, students collaborate with clinical supervisors to develop practical nursing skills specific to mental health care. The course also provides access to modern training resources including simulation labs, virtual reality technology, and specialized learning software.While participating in interdisciplinary learning with nursing students from other specialties, mental health nursing students also complete focused training to develop specialized knowledge and professional identity within their field.Program HighlightsOur NMC-accredited Mental Health Nursing program prepares graduates for professional registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.Train in our state-of-the-art facilities featuring clinical simulation areas, patient handling spaces, and emergency care rooms - designed for safe, practical skill development.Participate in global health initiatives through DMU Global, where past students have contributed to healthcare projects in Peru, public health improvements in India, and studied health disparities in the US.Benefit from our five decades of nursing education expertise, delivering top-tier professional training to a diverse student body.Career ProspectsGraduates qualify for NMC registration and can pursue various roles across NHS, nonprofit, and private healthcare organizations. Entry-level registered nurses can earn £28,407 (NHS 2023/24 pay scale). Postgraduate study options are available for career advancement, including specialized certifications, doctoral programs, and master's degrees such as our Physician Associate Studies MSc.
GCSEs - Five GCSEs at grade C/4 or above including: English and Maths, Passes in Functional Key Skills in Level 2 Maths and English will only be accepted if the qualification and awarding organisation is regulated by Ofqual. Plus one of the following: A Level - A minimum of 112 UCAS points from 2 or more A levels, including at least two subjects at C or above. We do not accept General Studies or UCAS points achieved through music exams. T Levels - Merit in Health overall, BTEC - BTEC National Diploma - normally in Health and Social Care or Applied Science at DMM, BTEC Extended Diploma - normally in Health and Social Care or Applied Science at DMM. Access course - AHE (Nursing and Midwifery), AHE (Science), AHE (Health Professions), Pass in the QAA Access to HE with a minimum of 96 UCAS points, GCSE English and Maths or functional skills level 2 qualifications in English and Maths are required. We will normally require students to have had a break from full-time education before undertaking the Access course. International Baccalaureate 26+ points. If English is not your first language an IELTS score of 7 overall when you start the course is essential, with a 7.0 in all components except writing which should be at least 6.5.
