Migration policy decisions frequently stem from political agendas, reinforced by misconceptions about why people migrate while overlooking or misinterpreting the views of refugees and migrants themselves. By adopting a migrant-focused methodology and collaborating extensively with lawmakers, policy experts, NGOs, local governments, social enterprises, and media outlets, this research helped reshape narratives and approaches in the UK, EU, and worldwide.
The MEDMIG study provided fresh understanding of Mediterranean migration patterns in 2015, countering prevailing political and media portrayals while guiding migration policies across Europe and other regions. The outcomes have:
Amplified migrant perspectives in European and global policy discussions, an initiative now advanced by the GCRF-supported MIDEQ Hub,
Shaped strategies and operations of international bodies, NGOs, and municipal authorities,
Enhanced public understanding of migrant experiences through media coverage and corporate partnerships,
Contributed to educational frameworks in UK schools via PositiveNegatives' Maths of Migration (MoM) initiative and teaching materials created by the Royal Geographical Society.
