The School of Social Sciences and Humanities at Loughborough University specializes in International Relations, Politics, and History. As a globally recognized hub for research and education, we explore diverse aspects of modern politics, international affairs, and historical studies. Our mission is to drive groundbreaking research that shapes both scholarly discussions and public discourse.
Our research spans modern political systems, international relations, political philosophy, and historical periods from early modern to contemporary times. While our work primarily bridges humanities with political and social sciences, we also generate significant interdisciplinary contributions. These include studies on intellectual history, social movements, gender politics, global affairs, security analysis, governance structures, political art, religion's role in politics, media history, and digital humanities.
Our research excellence was demonstrated in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, where we ranked among the UK's top 10 institutions for research concentration.
We provide an encouraging atmosphere for PhD candidates, promoting close collaboration between faculty and students. Doctoral researchers contribute to seminar organization and benefit from personalized career guidance, including support for securing research positions and academic publishing.
Our alumni hold distinguished roles at institutions like Vienna's Wiesenthal Institute, Exeter University, Queen's University Belfast, and University College Dublin. Many have also established careers in academic publishing or joined prominent advocacy groups and NGOs across the UK and internationally.
