European Politics and Area Studies represents a specialized research field available within our Politics and International Relations graduate programs (MPhil, PhD). Our Department of Politics and International Relations boasts a vibrant research environment, renowned for its high-caliber academic output and increasing success in securing research funding. Students can pursue supervision in diverse areas including: Comparative government, European governance, EU institutional frameworks, EU policy-making, Europe's political economy, The Eurozone, Social welfare systems in Europe, Public policy in Europe, European integration processes, EU foreign relations, Political parties and electoral systems in Europe, Defense and security in Europe, Historical development of European unity, France's role in Europe, Germany's European relations, Italy's European engagement, and Regional governance structures across Europe. The department maintains an active postgraduate network and hosts both the Wales Governance Centre and the European Governance, Identity and Public Policy Research Unit, drawing international scholars from across the globe.

Qualification Requirements

Applicants should have a good Honours degree in Politics or International Relations (2:1 or equivalent) or overseas equivalent in a relevant subject.

We will consider all individual applicants on their specific merits. If you do not have the standard qualifications for the course, you may still apply. Your application will be considered if you have the following,

Masters degree in Politics or International Relations (or equivalent) with an average mark of at least 65%.
Applicants with appropriate professional experience.
Interviews (via Skype/Phone or in person) may be conducted to identify and assess the academic merit of prospective students.
Those whose first language is not English must obtain a score of at least 7.0 in IELTS (with no less than 6.5 in the Writing element and no less than 5.5 in Listening, Speaking and Reading).
