Our Music research program (MPhil, PhD) includes a specialization in Musicology, ideal for music graduates focusing on historical musicology, music aesthetics, theory, and analysis. This pathway prepares students for academic careers and music-related writing. Our faculty brings diverse expertise, with notable strengths in: Critical Musicology: Exploring modern aesthetics and philosophy of music. Ethnomusicology: Covering African (including diaspora), Celtic, and Islamic traditions from anthropological viewpoints, with potential to explore other regions. Historical Musicology: Specializing in Contemporary British Music, Viennese musical life (1750-1830), 18th-century music aesthetics, 19th-century French opera, British musical society in the 1800s, performance practices, popular music, and post-war French compositions. Additional areas may be available.
