Science and technology studies represent a vital field within British sociology, with our institution being among Europe's foremost centers of excellence. Our research encompasses multiple key initiatives in this domain. The first, centered around the Centre for the Study of Knowledge, Expertise and Science (KES), has pioneered novel concepts regarding expertise and introduced an innovative research approach - the Imitation Game - which has attracted significant European Research Council funding. KES faculty have guided numerous PhD candidates employing ethnographic and interview techniques across diverse scientific fields, including biotechnology, economics, technology transfer, climate science, and theoretical physics. Our second major research initiative examines the sociological implications of emerging biomedical technologies, continuing the impactful work of the ESRC Centre for the Economic and Social Aspects of Genomics (2002-2012). Current investigations in this area address: the clinical implications of next-generation sequencing, advancements in reproductive technologies involving mitochondrial transfer, the intersection of neuroscience with autism diagnoses, and prenatal screening for Down syndrome.
