The planet's seas and shorelines host incredible ecosystems and marine life while supporting vital and expanding sectors such as maritime transport, recreation, and clean energy. As a marine geography specialist, you'll acquire the expertise required to protect our marine environments and help both established and emerging ocean-based industries operate sustainably. Our Marine Geography program offers a distinctive blend of physical and environmental earth sciences. You'll examine the scientific principles governing human-ocean interactions and address worldwide concerns including seawater acidification and coastal flooding. The South Wales region boasts a remarkably varied marine ecosystem featuring tidal estuaries, wildlife-rich islands, offshore energy projects, and Britain's biggest petroleum port in Milford Haven. We frequently visit locations like the Bristol Channel, Glamorgan's Heritage Coast, and the Gower Peninsula to conduct fieldwork including seabed surveys, aquatic sampling, habitat charting, and coastal measurements. International excursions may include destinations like Malta, Jersey, or Greece, as we've visited previously. This four-year degree includes an optional year abroad at a partner institution, subject to academic achievement. An international study experience allows you to immerse yourself in foreign cultures, discover alternative academic perspectives, and investigate unfamiliar terrains and coastal systems. You'll build global connections while developing valuable personal attributes like adaptability, problem-solving skills, and perseverance - qualities that enhance your competitiveness in today's global job market.
