The planet's seas and shorelines harbor incredible ecosystems and marine life while supporting vital and expanding sectors such as maritime transport, coastal tourism, and clean energy. As a marine geography specialist, you'll acquire the expertise required to maintain ocean health and promote sustainability across both established and emerging marine industries. Our Marine Geography program offers a distinctive blend of physical and environmental earth sciences. You'll examine the scientific connections between human societies and marine environments while addressing worldwide concerns including seawater acidification and coastal flooding. The South Wales region boasts a remarkably varied coastal ecosystem featuring expansive tidal estuaries, wildlife-rich islands, offshore wind farms, and Britain's largest petroleum port at Milford Haven. Through frequent excursions to the Bristol Channel, Glamorgan Heritage Coast, and Gower Peninsula, you'll enhance your fieldwork and marine research capabilities by conducting offshore surveys, water sampling, habitat mapping, and coastal erosion studies. International field trips have previously included destinations like Malta, Jersey, and Greece.
Career opportunities
Maintaining marine ecosystem health is essential for humanity's survival. Oceans generate approximately 50% of Earth's oxygen and sequester half of anthropogenic carbon emissions. Marine geographers play a crucial role in addressing present and future oceanic challenges, ensuring the protection of critical habitats while promoting sustainable development in fisheries, tourism, shipping, and renewable energy sectors.
Graduates can pursue diverse career paths including marine conservation, environmental consulting, or geospatial analysis for maritime applications. The program also equips students with transferable skills valued across multiple industries such as insurance, finance, education, and urban planning.
Our alumni have secured positions with various organizations globally, including the UK Hydrographic Office, Titan Environmental Surveys, the Environment Agency, port authorities, and international marine protection agencies.
