The MSc by Research (MScRes) is a full-time, one-year research-focused program that distinguishes itself from traditional taught Master's degrees through its greater emphasis on research. Unlike coursework-based assessments, this degree is evaluated through a viva voce (oral examination), similar to a PhD process. The program develops advanced research capabilities, covering essential skills like literature review, ethical considerations, project management, grant applications, and data analysis. These competencies prepare graduates for PhD studies or immediate research roles in academic and scientific institutions. While specific funded opportunities may occasionally be advertised, prospective students can explore research possibilities with potential supervisors at any time. The School's Research pages provide information about faculty expertise and contact details. Students receive exceptional research guidance from world-renowned supervisors and benefit from the School's extensive network of partnerships with public and private sector organizations at local, national, and global levels.
Career Prospects
Beyond gaining specialized knowledge, this postgraduate training enhances overall employability by demonstrating independent work capability, analytical thinking, and innovative problem-solving skills. The program fosters professional development in communication, collaboration, and leadership while providing practical experience. Alumni have pursued diverse career paths including academic research, environmental consulting, government agencies (such as DEFRA), water management, scientific publishing, landscape architecture, and various roles within research institutions.
