This program offers a dynamic way to explore languages, culture, and history within both Welsh and global frameworks. You can pair a modern language (Chinese, French, German, or Spanish, starting at beginner or advanced levels) with Welsh studies. Each year, half your coursework will focus on modern languages, while the other half centers on Welsh. In the Welsh component, you'll examine diverse facets of Welsh culture across various historical periods, with language modules designed to help you excel in bilingual and multilingual settings.
Every modern language course incorporates both written skills (such as translation and essay composition) and spoken skills taught by native speakers.
Elective modules in modern languages let you explore the cinema, literature, history, and culture of the countries tied to your chosen language.
In the Welsh studies portion, you'll discover elements of Welsh culture and history that enhance your modern language studies, including how novels, poetry, and other cultural expressions have influenced Wales' identity throughout different eras.
Beyond coursework, extracurricular activities will deepen your subject expertise while helping you connect with peers. These include cultural and social gatherings organized by student-led groups within academic departments. Additionally, Pontio—Bangor University's Arts and Innovation Centre—hosts numerous cultural events just minutes away from many of your classes.
