The Power Electronics, Machines and Power Systems (PEMPS) Group is a growing research team at Aston University focused on investigating both theoretical and applied aspects of power electronics and their influence on electrical power infrastructure. Their work spans from studying hierarchical complex networks like power electronic systems to gaining practical industry experience with distribution and transmission networks. The group maintains strong industry connections and provides undergraduate education (mainly foundation degrees) for major power utility companies.
The electrical sector is transforming to develop tomorrow's smart grid systems. Aston's Power Engineering and Power Electronics research team maintains that power electronic innovations (including electronic circuit breakers and fault-current limiters) will be crucial for upcoming advancements. These transformations encompass bidirectional power transfer, rising energy needs (driven by growing electric transportation), combined AC/DC networks, and incorporating various energy storage solutions alongside demand-side management - all requiring smart control and communication systems. These developments extend beyond conventional power grids to include all electrical networks, such as those in aerospace and other transportation sectors.
