Our doctoral research programs enable you to participate in existing research initiatives or pursue your own academic interests in English Literature, guided by our expert faculty. You'll be assigned two primary supervisors, with access to additional faculty support when needed. Our supervisors possess extensive knowledge across diverse areas of English literature, with particular strengths in Renaissance studies, Shakespearean scholarship, Romantic and Victorian periods, modernist works, feminist literature, science and creativity, classical influences, performance arts, and cultural studies.
You'll pursue your research within a cooperative academic setting that maintains robust connections with research networks both within our institution and beyond. We organize and participate in numerous scholarly events for faculty and graduate students, including regular departmental seminars, international conferences, and the biennial Skinner Young lecture focusing on Shakespeare and Renaissance studies. Our seminar series provides opportunities to present your work in an encouraging environment, and you'll have access to graduate research seminars at Cambridge University's English Faculty.
These activities, combined with our digital platforms, facilitate connections with fellow research students across various disciplines. Financial assistance may be available - we dedicate significant annual funding to support postgraduate conference attendance and research travel, along with select scholarship opportunities. Your specialized studies will be complemented by university-wide training programs, where you'll develop essential research skills in areas including research ethics, academic presentations, intellectual property rights, and digital humanities.
