The University of Birmingham's PhD program in Comparative Literature and Critical Theories enables students to design and pursue innovative doctoral research examining global cultures through literary analysis, diverse cultural expressions, and theoretical frameworks.
Based in the Modern Languages Department, this program draws on faculty expertise to guide projects studying cultural works not just in English, but also in Arabic, Catalan, French, Italian, Persian, Portuguese, Spanish, and Russian. The curriculum encompasses various theoretical approaches, ranging from Frankfurt School philosophy to postcolonial theory, decolonial research, environmental criticism, race studies, gender and sexuality analysis, feminist and queer perspectives, memory studies, translation theory, and linguistics.
Doctoral candidates can access cross-disciplinary supervision from scholars throughout the School of Languages, Cultures, Art History and Music and the College of Arts and Law, facilitating research that extends beyond literature to include music, cinema, and visual arts.
