This represents a possible research degree field, pending University approval. Those considering postgraduate research in this discipline should consult with the Dean to explore their project ideas.
Abertay's Sport and Exercise Sciences Department specializes in gender equity in sports, health risks of inactive lifestyles, exercise-based health interventions, high-intensity training, athletic performance optimization, and wellness in aging populations. Our research frequently examines groups with protected characteristics (such as age, gender, or disability) while addressing duty of care concerns - an increasingly vital aspect of modern sports. This work aligns with our collaborations with Police Scotland, Active Schools, sports governing bodies, nonprofit organizations, and small-to-medium enterprises.
The department features two specialized human performance labs for physiological assessment, plus dedicated facilities for strength training and biomechanics research. These resources provide cutting-edge equipment including EMG/ECG systems, ergometers, biofeedback technology, motion capture devices, force measurement tools, metabolic analyzers, and body composition assessment instruments.
Cross-disciplinary initiatives grant access to advanced biochemical analysis equipment and motion capture technology through partnerships with our games design department.
We maintain performance research collaborations with major Scottish sports organizations including Scottish Rugby, Dundee United FC, Dundee FC, and the Fife Flyers ice hockey team, creating novel research prospects.
Our research degrees equip graduates for academic careers while providing transferable skills applicable to diverse professional pathways beyond higher education.
