Leveraging the combined knowledge of faculty from Games and Arts alongside Games Technology and Mathematics, Abertay has established expertise in innovative research connecting performance arts with video games. This interdisciplinary domain receives academic support from practitioner-researchers specializing in areas including game development, digital arts, theatrical design, audio production, and game/media analysis. Numerous faculty members bring professional games industry experience, while Performance and Play research additionally benefits from our Emergent Technology Centre resources.
Investigations in Performance and Play may involve examining professional communities, experimental practice-based research using both digital and conventional media, integrating display technologies and extended reality (XR) applications into location-specific performances, and analyzing audience engagement with performances.
Abertay University serves as the principal collaborator for InGAME: Innovation for Games and Media Enterprise, an AHRC-supported research and development initiative for Dundee's gaming sector. Graduate students gain access to R&D prospects and networking opportunities with industry professionals. Dundee maintains one of the UK's most established and thriving game development ecosystems, with the university fostering strong connections to local, national, and international game studios.
