This program is designed for individuals seeking to develop the skills and confidence needed to support women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the initial six weeks postpartum. Participants will acquire comprehensive knowledge and practical abilities to work independently, ensuring the safety and well-being of mothers and newborns while providing appropriate family care. The full-time curriculum must be completed within five years, as mandated by the Midwifery Council of New Zealand (MCNZ), with potential approval for a sixth year upon request. The first year focuses on theoretical learning, while the second and third years blend practice with theory, and the fourth year emphasizes hands-on experience. Available throughout the Midland region, students can enroll at their nearest regional hub, provided they reside within the designated catchment area of that hub and local DHB. Mandatory on-campus intensive courses in Hamilton feature theory-dense content requiring full attendance, with students arranging their own travel and lodging. Year 1 includes eleven week-long block courses running Monday-Thursday (8am–5pm) and Friday (8am-12pm), allowing regional students to return home safely by daylight. Clinical placements and Hub Education tutorials typically occur locally, though one four-week external placement (usually in year three or four) is required. Practical experience spans primary units, DHB hospitals, community midwife practices, and other services, enabling students to guide women through all pregnancy stages. Graduates must pass the National Midwifery Examination to achieve registered midwife status.
