The Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) program equips students to tackle global challenges by integrating philosophical analysis, political science perspectives, and economic methodologies. Our curriculum covers logic, ethics, collective decision-making, behavioral studies, political philosophy, economic theory, and intellectual history. Otago's PPE students engage with intensive coursework across all three disciplines, supplemented by interdisciplinary seminars and independent research projects. These fields share deep historical connections - economics emerged from political economy, welfare economics incorporates philosophical justice concepts, and scientific philosophy influences research methods in both economics and political science. Our program provides a more comprehensive understanding of analytical techniques across these disciplines than conventional single-subject majors offer.
PPE alumni leverage their problem-solving abilities across diverse careers: our graduates include diplomats, media professionals, legal practitioners, project leaders, scholars, corporate leaders, startup founders, financial experts, and policy advisors. You'll find PPE graduates in creative industries, hospitality sectors, and tech fields, while those in public service hold positions at the Supreme Court and various government departments including Environmental Protection, Finance, Social Services, and Taxation.
