The Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) program equips students to address global challenges through an integrated approach, blending philosophical analysis, political science perspectives, and economic methodologies. The curriculum encompasses demanding studies in logic, ethics, collective decision-making, behavioral studies, political philosophy, economic theory, and intellectual history. Otago's PPE students undertake intensive coursework across these three foundational disciplines, supplemented by cross-disciplinary seminars and independent research projects. These fields share deep historical connections - economics emerged from political economy, welfare economics incorporates philosophical notions of justice, while scientific philosophy influences research methods in both economics and political science.
PPE alumni leverage their problem-solving abilities across diverse sectors: recent graduates have pursued careers in diplomacy, media, law, project leadership, academia, corporate management, startups, finance, and policy development. Our graduates work across industries including media, hospitality, and tech, with government placements ranging from the Supreme Court to key ministries like Environment, Treasury, Social Services, and Revenue.
