The Doctor of Laws (LLD) represents an advanced doctoral distinction and stands among the University's highest academic honors. This qualification is granted exclusively to scholars who have produced exceptional, groundbreaking work in legal history, philosophy, interpretation, or analysis. Typically, candidates should either hold an Otago degree or have established prior connections with the University.
Unlike traditional doctoral programs, this degree doesn't involve coursework or guided research. Instead, applicants must formally submit their published books from reputable publishers, peer-reviewed journal articles, and potentially unpublished materials pending Senate approval. These submissions undergo rigorous evaluation by distinguished legal scholars from both national and international institutions.
