Doctoral candidates are analytical, inquisitive, and innovative scholars who conduct groundbreaking research spanning a minimum of three years. The University of Auckland offers this prestigious research program across more than 100 disciplines, where students pursue independent investigations under the mentorship of distinguished academics and research pioneers. Throughout their doctoral journey, students enhance their personal, professional, and scholarly capabilities. Our PhD candidates regularly showcase their findings at national and global conferences while building connections with experts in their field. Comprehensive doctoral regulations, including the PhD statute, can be found in our Doctoral policies and guidelines. For subjects not explicitly listed, alternative program titles may be available.
This research-intensive degree focuses exclusively on thesis work, typically demanding three to four years of full-time commitment or six to eight years part-time. Conducted under expert supervision, the program culminates in a significant, original dissertation. Applicants with New Zealand postgraduate credentials must possess an LLB(Hons), a law honors degree, or a Master of Laws with first-class or upper second-class honors.
