This one-year Master's program delves into Irish and global conflicts throughout the 20th century, the most turbulent era in documented history. Warfare has frequently altered humanity's trajectory, creating new possibilities while eliminating others. By analyzing historical conflicts and their societal effects, we gain deeper insight into our contemporary world. A portion of the curriculum focuses on conflict resolution, studying diplomatic history and international negotiations. Participants will explore diverse historical methodologies for examining war and peace, available source materials, and key theoretical debates in the field. The program covers subjects like the Cold War, both World Wars, and the Northern Ireland conflict—Western Europe's most protracted and severe post-1945 insurgency.
Throughout the program, students hone advanced research, analytical, presentation, and debating skills valuable for their future careers. They'll master academic research techniques while investigating a self-selected topic using primary archival sources. This MA serves as excellent preparation for PhD studies and opens doors to rewarding professions in academia, education, diplomacy, archives, libraries, and related fields.
