The BSc Midwifery program equips you to become a skilled midwife attuned to the needs of expectant mothers and their families, leading to professional registration (R.M.). Midwifery, meaning "with woman," involves providing comprehensive care throughout pregnancy, childbirth, and the postnatal period. Contemporary midwives address diverse needs including socio-economic, cultural, educational, and psychological aspects of women's health.
This full-time program includes clinical placements across multiple hospitals in the University of Limerick Hospital Group and regional maternity services. The curriculum emphasizes a wellness-focused, woman-centered approach, covering normal midwifery care alongside studies in physiology, sociology, research, management, and healthcare ethics. Students develop skills to identify and manage complications while pursuing both academic and professional qualifications that require dedicated study.
UL provides access opportunities for disadvantaged students, requiring supporting financial documentation. Interested applicants should contact the UL Access Office in advance.
Midwifery presents physical and emotional challenges. Applicants must demonstrate good health and capability to meet professional competencies. Program admission requires satisfactory Garda vetting and health screening (including vaccinations), arranged by the Department of Nursing and Midwifery, with potential costs borne by students.
