The Bachelor of Midwifery Science is a four-year undergraduate program where students master both the theoretical and practical aspects of midwifery.
This degree is offered in collaboration with the Health Service Executive (HSE) West. The curriculum blends academic study with hands-on clinical training. Classroom instruction equips students with essential professional knowledge through lectures, seminars, workshops, practical exercises, skill development sessions, and independent study. Clinical training occurs across four hospitals within the Saolta University Health Care Group: University Hospital Galway, Mayo University Hospital, Portiuncula University Hospital, and Sligo University Hospital, providing diverse practical experience.
During clinical rotations, students receive guidance from qualified midwife preceptors specifically trained to mentor them. The final year includes combined clinical/theory instruction in the first semester, followed by a 36-week clinical internship from January through September.
