UL's BM BS Graduate Entry Medical Programme welcomes graduates from all academic backgrounds. This cutting-edge curriculum allows students to finish their undergraduate medical education in just four years within a graduate-focused learning environment. Over these four years, you'll master fundamental medical and clinical sciences that serve as the foundation for postgraduate studies and careers across all medical specialties.
The program follows a conventional academic calendar. The first two years involve on-campus instruction with 33 teaching weeks annually, beginning in August. Clinical training starts in July for Years 3 and 4, where students rotate through key medical specialties at partner hospitals and primary care facilities.
During the final two years, students gain hands-on experience in clinical environments. The School collaborates with six teaching hospitals and six Primary Care Teaching Networks, as detailed below.
Year 3 includes an 18-week placement in primary care settings within the school's PCTNs. The remaining time focuses on hospital-based training in Medicine and Surgery, plus a three-week Special Study Module (SSM).
Year 4 features six-week clinical rotations in Obstetrics/Gynaecology, Paediatrics, and Psychiatry, along with additional six-week blocks in Medicine & Related Specialties and Surgery & Related Specialties. Another six weeks are dedicated to SSM. Students should anticipate completing some clinical training outside Limerick, potentially for multiple rotations. Those placed in the Mid-Western Regional hospital network for Year 3 Medicine/Surgery must complete their senior rotations at an affiliated hospital in Year 4.
