For those exploring teaching careers with a passion for languages, this program could be your ideal choice. This four-year degree draws students who possess outstanding communication abilities, high motivation, and enthusiasm for language education.
UL's School of Education stands as Ireland's leading provider of post-primary teacher training and ranks among the global top 100 for Education programs. The University of Limerick also holds a position in Europe's top 75 institutions for teaching and learning quality. The program's objective is to prepare future educators with the necessary competencies for a rewarding career in language instruction. Upon completion, graduates will be certified to teach their selected languages at both Junior Cycle and Senior Cycle levels.
This course offers language-focused school graduates the chance to develop advanced cultural understanding and fluency in two languages. Available options include French, German, Irish, Japanese, and Spanish, with students selecting two.
Spanning four years, the program incorporates multiple teaching practice placements in schools. These consist of a ten-week placement during the spring term of year two and another ten-week placement in the autumn term of year four. These practical experiences enable student teachers to enhance their professional skills under university faculty supervision.
Before concluding your teacher training, you must demonstrate documented participation in a minimum four-week immersive language education experience. This can be divided into two segments, each lasting at least two weeks, with one segment occurring in a region where the language is natively spoken. Students arrange these immersion experiences independently and may seek financial assistance through various funding sources. Note that these immersion periods must occur outside UL's academic calendar.
