At the School of Political Science and Sociology, doctoral candidates conduct their research within their supervisor's designated Research Cluster. The Structured PhD program offers comprehensive training, allowing students to choose from various interdisciplinary courses. Available modules cover multiple aspects: discipline-focused options to deepen expertise in specialized fields like Social and Political Theory; dissertation-related courses providing essential research skills such as Qualitative and Quantitative Methods; professional growth opportunities including presenting at international conferences; and career-enhancing training like workshops and IT skills development. Every PhD candidate receives guidance from a primary Supervisor(s) and a Graduate Research Committee composed of seasoned academics, who assist in designing their academic path and offer continuous research support.

Qualification Requirements

The minimum qualification necessary to be considered for a PhD is a high honours primary degree, or equivalent international qualification. Admission to a research degree is at the discretion of the potential Supervisor and Head of School, and is based on a proposal from the applicant following discussion with a potential supervisor.

English Language Requirements

IELTS: 6.5 overall, no less than 5.5 in any one component; Cambridge C1 Advanced (CAE): 176 overall; Cambridge C2 Advanced (CPE): 180 overall; TOEFL: 88 overall (7 Listening, 16 Speaking, 18 Writing, 8 Reading); Pearson PTE: 61 overall, no less than 48 in any one component.
