The Structured PhD program offers doctoral candidates access to diverse interdisciplinary coursework. Students can choose from an extensive selection of modules designed to:
strengthen subject-matter expertise through discipline-focused instruction
provide research-critical competencies needed for dissertation completion, such as supplementary language acquisition
support professional growth through activities like presenting at global academic forums
improve career prospects via transferable skill development, including career preparation seminars and digital proficiency training.
All candidates receive guidance from a primary Supervisor(s) and a Graduate Research Committee composed of seasoned scholars who assist with academic planning and research support.
This academic discipline welcomes both continental and analytic philosophical approaches. Key research concentrations include post-Kantian thought, contemporary continental philosophy, aesthetics, and bioethics. The hosted COBRA research center particularly promotes bioethical and professional ethics investigations. Continental philosophy specializations feature Kantian studies, Hegelian philosophy, Nietzschean thought, Phenomenology, Philosophy of Art/Culture, and Philosophy of Religion. Additional research opportunities exist in Political Philosophy, Modern Philosophy (both early and late periods), Philosophy of Science, Philosophy of Psychiatry, Philosophy of Mind, and Irish intellectual traditions.
For the Structured PhD in Philosophy we are looking for students with some background in philosophy (or cognate areas) who have, or expect to be awarded, a degree of at least upper-second class standard, or equivalent international qualification.
English Language Requirements
IELTS: 6.5 overall, no less than 5.5 in any one component; Cambridge C1 Advanced (CAE): 176 overall; Cambridge C2 Advanced (CPE): 180 overall; TOEFL: 88 overall (7 Listening, 16 Speaking, 18 Writing, 8 Reading); Pearson PTE: 61 overall, no less than 48 in any one component.
