Future PhD applicants should reach out to potential supervisors to explore research opportunities prior to submitting their applications. Our faculty listings detail available research specialties.
The Philosophy department at UCD offers a four-year structured doctoral program for full-time students. First-year PhD candidates must complete three graduate-level courses, with the possibility of taking up to two at Trinity College. Subsequently, students develop an 80,000-word thesis with support from a supervisory team consisting of a primary advisor and two additional faculty members.
Students may alternatively choose to complete their studies earlier by submitting a shorter MLitt thesis, which has less demanding originality criteria.
Our doctoral alumni have achieved notable career success, securing positions in philosophy departments throughout Europe, North America, and Asia.
Understanding the PhD as professional preparation for academic careers, UCD Philosophy provides multiple forms of support:
Students are urged to participate in university-hosted academic events and attend relevant international conferences,
The department assists students in organizing their own academic events and participating in research seminars,
All doctoral researchers can acquire teaching experience through undergraduate tutoring positions (with appropriate compensation). Advanced students may occasionally have chances to deliver lectures.
To be eligible to enter one of UCD’s PhD programmes, a candidate must have reached a high honours standard at the examination for the primary degree. In some cases, a Master’s degree may also be required. In certain cases, a candidate may be able to provide other evidence to the School in order to satisfy the entry requirements of the programme.
