The Structured PhD in Old and Middle Irish offers a four-year full-time or six-year part-time academic journey combining coursework and research. Candidates should possess an excellent undergraduate honors degree or demonstrate equivalent qualifications approved by the Head of Discipline and the College of Arts, Social Sciences, and Celtic Studies.
This doctoral program provides comprehensive training through various interdisciplinary courses. Students can choose from diverse modules designed to:
strengthen subject-matter expertise in specialized fields (such as language or literature studies)
develop essential research skills needed for dissertation completion (including academic writing)
advance professional growth opportunities (like presenting at global conferences)
improve career prospects through transferable skills training (including digital competencies).
Each student receives guidance from a primary Supervisor or Co-Supervisors, along with a Graduate Research Committee composed of seasoned scholars, to design their academic path and offer continuous research support.
Alumni have achieved notable success across various sectors including education, academic research, publishing, broadcasting, journalism, and cultural heritage management.
Candidates must have a high honours standard in a primary degree in Irish, Welsh, Celtic Studies, or similar, or present such other evidence of suitability as will satisfy the Head of Discipline and the College of Arts, Social Sciences, and Celtic Studies. Many successful applicants will already hold a Master's degree also.
Admission to the PhD is at the discretion of the potential supervisor and the Head of Discipline. Initial enquiries should be made to the Head of Discipline.
